Obituary for JAMES MURPHY WHITE

Memorial Services will be at 2:30 P.M. on Tuesday, March 8 at the First Baptist Church of Canyon with Rev. Jim Hancock, long-time Canyon pastor, officiating. There will be a visitation at the church following the service. Private interment will be in Dreamland Cemetery, Canyon, Texas. James (Murphy) White, 79, died Saturday, March 5, 2005 at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas after complications caused by a heart attack and diabetes. Mr. White was born on December 14, 1925 in Plainview to pioneer ranching family, Jim and Vada White. Murphy lived in Canyon most of his adult life. He graduated from WT High and attended West Texas State University. He relocated to Possum Kingdom Lake in 1994. Murphy served in the United States Air Force as a crew chief on a C-47 while stationed at Biloxi, Mississippi. After the war, he returned to Canyon where he continued in the family farming and ranching business, director/stockholder in West Texas State Bank, as well as other business ventures. Murphy was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Shirley Byars White, whom he met while attending WT High and WTSU. During his marriage to Shirley they had two children, Krista White Stephenson and Abbey White Bates. Survivors include two daughters, Abbey Bates, and husband, Bater, of Dallas, and Krista Stephenson, and husband, Steve, of Tyler; four grandchildren; one brother, Joe Dale White, of Amarillo; close friend and companion, Nadene Lyles, of Amarillo/Canyon; and two sisters-in-law, Billie & Harold Erwin family, of Amarillo, and Joan Connor family, of Canyon. The family suggests memorials be to the Possum Kingdom West Lake Volunteer EMS, HC 74 Box 417, Graham, Texas 76450.
