Obituary for James "Jim" Elliot Bye

On August 4th, 2023, James “Jim” Elliot Bye, of Canyon Texas, was surrounded by his family when he was peacefully reunited with his oldest son and other loved ones.

Services will be at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, August 9, 2023 at Brooks Chapel in Canyon with Rev. Rick Enns, pastor of First Methodist Church of Canyon, officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 6:00 P.M. on Tuesday, August 8, 2023 at Brooks Chapel.

Jim was born on March 7th, 1933, to Alfred and Marie Halvorson-Bye in Michigan North Dakota. After 8th grade, his family moved to Park Rapids Minnesota, but he stayed in Michigan North Dakota, to farm. He would visit Park Rapids monthly to see the love of his life, Marlene. The two of them were married August 2, 1952, and just celebrated their 71st, and 2 days anniversary.

In 1956 Jim and Marlene received a letter from Texas which encouraged them to move their family to Pampa where he was a Ford Mechanic for 14 years and also worked on the natural gas pipeline. Jim loved mechanical work and followed an opportunity that moved the family to Canyon, Texas where he worked as a Ford mechanic. He worked on cars until the family started Bye and Sons Trucking, which he was the Owner/Operator. He loved to drive anything with wheels until 85 when Jim parked the Peterbuilt, but continued working on family, friends’, and neighbors’ vehicles.

When he wasn’t driving you could find him in the garage where he loved for family, friends, grandkids, and great grandkids to come visit. Sharing his mechanical knowledge with his sons and grandsons brought him great joy and was one of his favorite hobbies. Without fail, when walking into the garage he would greet you with a smile while saying “go get yourself a beer, they’re in the fridge.”

He loved to drive the UTV “buggie” around the neighborhood, give chocolates and cookies to his great granddaughter Ella, and visit North Dakota with Marlene to reminisce down memory lane and visit their lifelong friends and family.

He is preceded in death by his baby sister, Deloris, his parents, Alfred and Marie Halvorson Bye, his three brothers, Donnie, Marvin, and Harold and his oldest son, James “Dewey” Bye and daughter in-law, Glenda Ann Bye.

Survivors include the love of his life, Marlene Bye; son, Terry and wife Teresa Bye of Meridian, MS; son, Ron and wife Theresa Bye, of Canyon, TX; his 9 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family is asking that donations be made to BSA Harrington Cancer Center or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
