Obituary for James Douglas Hamilton

James Douglas Hamilton, 73, of Amarillo, passed away on August 18, 2019 after battling with Alzheimer’s. Celebration of life services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at Brooks Chapel in Canyon. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Amarillo. Military Honors provided by Volleys for Veterans. James Douglas Hamilton was born on October 19, 1945 in Portland, Oregon to James Douglas Hamilton and Lucile Reno. He graduated from Eastern New Mexico University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and a Master’s Degree in Psychology. On April 11, 2010, he married Kathryn Chambless-Turner in Amarillo. James was a 20-year veteran of the US Navy and Marines. He served as corpsman and medic in Vietnam. While in the Philippines, he helped build two orphanages. He finished out his military career by helping homeless veterans find jobs. He retired in 2014. James was known for his loving and giving heart. He was always willing to help a friend or a stranger. He was a great humanitarian, who cared very deeply for the poor. He was Kathryn’s best friend and everybody’s hero. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Kathryn; four brothers, Gail Hamilton, Ray Schaffer, Joe Schaffer, and Don Schaffer; two daughters, Stephanie Caster and Lisa Riley; five grandchildren, Rayden, Ramsey, Mia, Jarred and Michael; and three great grandchildren, AJ Wilson, Cayden Riley and Mackenzie Riley. The family suggests memorials be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 110 Mesa Park Dr, Ste. 250, El Paso, TX 79912.
