Obituary for IRENE RUTH DAFFERN HARDAWAY

Services will be at 1:30 P.M. on Thursday, April 13, 2006 at Happy"s Memorial Chapel with Rev. Tom Stribling, pastor of First United Methodist Church of Happy, officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 12 at Happy"s Memorial Chapel from 6:30 to 8:30 P.M. Burial will be in Happy Cemetery, Happy, Texas. Irene was born on June 25, 1922 in Plainview, Texas to Robert Custer and Mattie Daffern. She graduated from Plainview High School in 1940 and Lubbock Beauty School in 1941. She met and married Lt. Harry Allen Hardaway May 22, 1943 in Plainview. They immediately moved to Pampa Air Force Base where Harry served as a Flight Instructor. After World War II they moved to Happy, Texas where Irene became involved in many coummunity activities. She served as president of PTA, Worthy Matron of OES, board member of the Methodist Church, RSVP, and was very active in Happy Senior Citizens. Irene was a fan of Happy High School athletics and enjoyed attending girl"s basketball. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and three brothers, Clarence, Harmon, and Wilson Daffern. The family is grateful to the staff at BSA Hospice and Life Enrichment and to the staff at Craig Methodist Retirement Center for their loving care. Survivors include two daughters, Betty Alfred and husband, Warren, of Georgetown, TX, and Carol Baker and husband, Duncan, of Derby Kansas; four grandchildren, West and JoAnn McKillip, of Amarillo, Allen and Shaunda McKillip, of Columbia, SC, Michael and Caety Alfred, of Ft. Worth, TX, and Dr. Kim Alfred, of Temple, TX; five great grandchildren, Reece, Jordan, and Risa McKillip, of Amarillo, and Austin and Jake McKillip, of Columbia, SC; one brother, Roy Daffern and wife, Georgia, of Plainview; and many nieces and nephews. The family suggests memorials be made to The Lord"s Acre Fund, FUMC or the Building Fund % First United Methodist Church, both at PO Box 343, Happy, Texas 79042.
