Obituary for HOMER EDWARD GARRETT

Graveside services will be at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Amarillo, Texas with eulogy given by Jimmy Lackey, close friend. Buck Garrett was born on March 26, 1922 to Henry and Faye Garrett in Breckenridge, Texas. Buck graduated from Borger High School in 1942 as an all-state center in football. He received a scholarship to Texas A&M but decided to attend Baylor University. He played at Baylor for two seasons before entering the Army Air Corps in 1944, serving as a pilot during World War II. He left the Air Force as a major but continued in the Air Force Reserves until 1982. Upon his return from the war, he enrolled in West Texas State Teacher"s College and played center and linebacker for three seasons with the Buffaloes. At WTSTC he won numerous football honors. He graduated in 1949 and was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers. His pro career was short-lived, however, and he returned to WTSTC and coached for one year under the legendary Frank Kimbrough. He also coached at Childress and Borger High Schools. In 1963, Buck moved to San Diego where his sister and her husband had located. He taught and coached at several schools in San Diego for 25 years, until his retirement in 1988. Buck"s first love was Texas, so as soon as he retired, he moved back to Canyon. He joined the "T" Club and became very active in WT"s sports, especially football. Buck had one other "major" hobby...collecting antique cars. At one time, he had nineteen cars. He and some of his former teammates, along with is car buff buddies, would drive all of the cars in the WT and Borger homecoming parades and the annual Canyon 4th of July parade. He continued this tradition for almost two decades. Just about everyone in Canyon recognized Buck and his cars, and his passion for football and his cars will be missed by all his friends. If you saw a salmon-colored "56 T-bird or a "75 Lincoln Continental cruising through Canyon, you knew to wave "Hi" to Buck. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Bettie Oldham, and a nephew, Ron Oldham. Buck is survived by a great-niece and great-nephew. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Buffalo Club at West Texas A&M University, WT Box 60049, Canyon, TX 79016 or to Odyssey Healthcare, 6900 I 40 W. Suite 1500, Amarillo, Texas 79106. Mr. Garrett will be available for viewing on Monday, Febraury 16 from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM and on Tuesday, February 17 from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
