Obituary for Hermelinda (Mela) Bazaldua

Hermelinda (Mela) Bazaldua, of Canyon, Texas, passed away on August 24, 2023 at the age of 95. Hermelinda was born in La Ascension, Mexico to Lucas Briones and Tibursia Mata. She married Valente Bazaldua on July 14, 1954, her husband for 63 years. Valente and Hermelinda resided in Canyon, Texas for 40 years.

Hermelinda's occupation was that of a housewife where she was the central figure of her children’s lives. She and Valente were best known for being inseparable. They loved helping their church family and friends in any way possible.

Hermelinda dedicated her life to the Lord, her husband, and her five children. She enjoyed cooking for her family and spoiling her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She loved to play games (bingo, cards, loteria), shopping, dressing up, listening to music, and going to casinos. She appeared to be reserved but she instilled competitiveness in any game she played and hated to lose. She was quick-witted, ornery, and blunt, but always greeted you with a smile. She loved growing her rose bushes and geraniums and had a knack for it.

Her memorial service will begin with a rosary held on Sunday, August 27, 2023 at 6:00 P.M. at Brooks Chapel. Mass will be at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, August 28, 2021 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church with concelebrant, Father Scott Raef. Burial will follow in Dreamland Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers, and sisters.

She is survived by her five children, Jose A. Bazaldua and wife Irma, of Canyon, J. Luis Bazaldua and wife Carmen, of Canyon, Maria Ruiz and husband Jose Luis, of Shallowater, Valente Bazaldua Jr. and wife Melinda, of Canyon, and Esmeralda Covey and husband Shon, of Amarillo; ten grandchildren, J. Luis, Jr., Antonio and wife Angela, Issa and husband Rob, Yanda, Aries and husband Will, Luisito, Jarrah, Christian, Meagan, and Ava; seven great grandchildren, Tyler, Eloise, Frankie, Tucker, Lucas, Noah, and Miles; niece that was more like a sister, Rosa Tienda and her children; nephew, Cande Bazaldua and wife Blanca and their children; numerous other nieces and nephews.
