He was also instrumental in working with Dr. Charles Smallwood to acquire Nance Ranch for West Texas A&M University. Never one to shy away from hard work and hard times, Herbert volunteered his labor, equipment and materials to make the Nance Ranch an incredible asset to WTAMU. He mentored the university"s agriculture students, hired many of them for his own operation and launched their successful careers to assure the industry thrives in the next generation. Very few Tri-State residents embody the western lifestyle with the integrity and immense accomplishments of Herbert Kuhlman. For all of his eighty-one years, he was a true cowboy in spirit and deed, and in 2001, the Board of Directors of the Tri-State Fair honored him as the Cowboy of the Year. He attributed his success to his family, the Panhandle land and his God. His credo was, "You work the land, you work close to God, and you work hard!"
