With her at her time of death was her husband of 62 years, W.O. Long, her daughter, Gail, and her grandson Jon. Helen Hannah Johnson Long was born on May 24, 1921 to Kizzie M. and George W. Johnson, in Canyon, Texas. She was the youngest of their seven children. She graduated from Canyon High School in 1938. She later moved to California to care for her parents while they lived there. While in California she worked as a "Rosie the Riveter" at a Lockheed plant, attended Los Angeles City College where she received a degree in dental assisting, and also served in the WAVES. After her parents" death she returned to Canyon and attended West Texas State University. She graduated from WT in 1950 with a degree in elementary education and a minor in home economics. While at WT, she met W.O. Long, who was also a student there after serving in Korea in the Army. They married on August 28, 1949. Upon his graduation from WT in the summer of 1950, Helen and W.O. moved to South Dakota as he began his career with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Helen also taught elementary school and junior high home economics for the Bureau during the course of their marriage. She also worked as a dental receptionist. Helen and W.O. lived on several Indian reservations throughout the western United States, and also in Alaska. They moved to Albuquerque in 1972 where they lived until 1994, when they retired and moved back to Canyon. Helen was a wonderful homemaker and skilled seamstress. She enjoyed gardening, playing bridge, reading, and fishing. She and W.O. had several opportunities to go salmon and halibut fishing in Alaska. Until her health no longer permitted her to do so, she enjoyed her Sunday school class at the First Baptist Church, where she was a life-long member. She participated in the quilting ministry of the church for many years and also attended the LLL monthly meetings and luncheon. Helen was a strong person in mind and spirit, as she dealt with multiple instances of serious health issues through the years. She is preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, a niece, a nephew, and several great-nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Helen"s hospice nurse, and bath aides, as well as the doctors and staff at BSA Hospice for their care and concern. They are also grateful for Rita, Minnie, and Norma who helped care for Helen at home after her stay in the hospital in October until her death. Survivors include her husband W.O., daughter Gail Humphries, son Bill Long, grandson Jon Berry, one niece, and several great-nieces and nephews. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the First Baptist Church of Canyon, 1717 4th Avenue, Canyon, TX 79015, BSA Hospice, PO Box 950, Amarillo, TX 79176, or a favorite charity.
