Obituary for HAZEL O. GILBERT PLASTER

Memorial services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, April 19 at the University Church of Christ with Bob Shepard and David Lough, officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 18 at Brooks Chapel from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. Interment will be private at Dreamland Cemetery. Hazel O. Gilbert Plaster was born August 9, 1913 in Armstrong County, Texas to Harry Clyde and Nellie Pearl Cobb Gilbert, the eldest of their four children. She was a 1928 graduate of Clarendon Junior College and received her B.A. degree in 1932 at West Texas State Teachers College, majoring in sociology, art and education. She studied with Ms. Robinson, attending the only Bohemian art-retreat in Palo Duro Canyon. She assisted her brother and two sisters in attending college and both her children in pursuing and receiving their doctoral degrees. But more than that, Hazel touched the lives of countless others as well and gave many the extra encouragement they needed to embrace new possibilities. Hazel loved life, lived in the moment, and her favorite saying was "I just don"t worry about things!" Hazel was dearly loved by those of us who knew her and will be sorely missed by all. For over forty years, Hazel and her husband John N. Plaster were teachers in the Texas public school system. Hazel taught in Eldridge, Allenreed, and Hopkins, Texas before her marriage, and fourth grade in Lamar Elementary in Pampa from 1954 until her retirement in 1979. Presaging today's commuter families, they lived and worked in two towns - teaching five days in Pampa, with two days a week in Canyon where John raised wheat and cattle. Hazel O. Gilbert married John N. Plaster on March 6, 1945, in Clarendon. They were married 35 years at the time of his death on November 21, 1982. Hazel was also preceded in death by her long-time friend J.B. Brown, her brother John Howard Gilbert and her son John C. Plaster; by her sister, Billie Louise Edlin Hufnagle; sisters-in-law Mamye Waggoner, Faye Hufnagle, Roxie Gilbert; brothers-in-law Lester L. Edlin, Lyle Whitman, Willard Clanton, Clyde Waggoner; nephews Buddy Clanton and Ronnie Hufnagle. Survivors include her sister Clynelle Gilbert Whitman, daughter Cynthia Plaster Branch, "adopted" daughter Pamela Clayton, daughter-in-law Janet Plaster; four grandchildren Chuck Branch, Jessica Benjamin, John Caleb Plaster, J'Taun Sanchez; nine great-grand children Skyler, Hunter, Zachary, Travis, Marcus, Pacey, Andrew, Daniel, Trevor; sister-in-law Dora Mae Clanton, brother-in-law Blaine Hufnagle; cousins Joanne & Otis Lemley, Ed Reed, Charles & Jean Cobb, Carl & Clara Hawes; nieces and nephews Donald Whitman, Carol Wold, Clinton Gilbert, Clay Gilbert, Gloria Fay Hitchcock, Bobbe Wright, Judy Milstead, Johnine Phillips, Michael Clanton, Kathy Volanty; grand nieces and nephews Michelle Smith, Cindy Gilbert, Melissa Swain, Cathy Whitman, Chad Wold, Blaine Hufnagle, and Bradley Hufnagle, Michael Hitchcock, Steve Hitchcock, Regan Wright, Christie Osburn, David Abbott, Joe Phillips, Jeff Phillips, Johnice Barnett, Jon-Micah Clanton, Cress Clanton, Camryn Holt; extended family of friends Lorena Piper, Ken Crossland, Ben and Elizabeth Brown, Elbert and Betty Brown, Janice and Aubry Conner, Maryann and Dale Barber. Hazel was a member of the Mary Ellen and Harvester Church of Christ in Pampa, Texas for over 20 years and, after retiring to Canyon, was a member of the University Church of Christ. She accrued over 4000 hours as a hospital auxiliary volunteer. Hazel was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi, American Association of University Women, and the Association of Retired Teachers. The family suggests memorials to the High Plains Children's Home, PO Box 7448, Amarillo, TX 79114.
