Obituary for H. R. FULTON

Services will be at 3:00 P.M. on Monday, June 20, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Rick Enns, pastor, officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. on Sunday, June 19, 2016 at Brooks Chapel. Burial will be private. H.R. Fulton was born on August 26th, 1925 at the family home north of Canyon, the only child of Geneva and H.R. Fulton Sr. H.R. entered WT Demonstration school in the first grade and graduated from WT High School in 1941. He attended West Texas State College until he was drafted into the Army Infantry in 1943. He served in Germany and Austria with the 42nd Rainbow Division until discharged in 1946. Returning to WTSU, H.R. earned a BS degree in piano in 1947 and taught piano as a graduate assistant until he opened H.R.'s Flowers and Music that summer. He married his wife Thelma G. Mercer on his birthday in 1948 who began teaching his music students as the flower business began to grow and require more of his time. The flower shop thrived and moved into a custom built facility in 1965, where it continues to operate today. H.R. was a Rotary Club member for 67 years, served 2 terms as the President of the Canyon Chamber of Commerce and 10 years on the Canyon City Commission and Neblett Hospital Board. H.R. and Thelma passionately served as founding members of the Amarillo Opera for over 20 years and H.R. served on the Amarillo Symphony Board for 10 years. H.R. is survived by his wife, Thelma of 67 years; his son, Richard Fulton and wife Sandy; two daughters Lauran Corson and husband Bill, and Jeanna McIntyre and husband Patrick; two grandchildren, Alex and Julie Corson; and cousin Debra Devenport and husband Farrell. The family suggests memorials be to the Amarillo Opera, 2223 S. Van Buren, Amarillo, Texas 79109.
