Obituary for GEORGIA COLEMAN

Jackie Coleman, 91, died January 11, 2007 at her home in Canyon, Texas. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, January 19 at Central Baptist Church in Port Arthur, Texas. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday, January 18, at Clayton-Thompson Funeral Home, Groves, Texas. A brief graveside commemoration will be conducted at the Flint Community Cemetery, Flint, Texas, at 4:30 p.m. Friday. Georgia Mildred Wactor Coleman was born April 24, 1915 in Franklin Parish, Louisiana, the youngest of eight children of William D. and Clara Wactor. Her father was a farmer and a locally renowned hunter and fisherman, occasionally serving as a guide in the woodlands and waters of the Tensas River region. Among those he took hunting was Detroit Tigers pitching ace Schoolboy Rowe, for whom Mrs. Coleman remembered helping her mother prepare a meal. In high school, Mrs. Coleman was an accomplished basketball player. She played guard on the Gilbert (Louisiana) High School team that went to the state championship in 1932. Mrs. Coleman met her husband, whom she married in 1936, while visiting her sister in Port Arthur, Texas. They lived in the Port Arthur area until 1952, when Mr. Coleman"s work took them to Lorain, Ohio. They returned to southeastern Texas in 1963. After Mr. Coleman retired in 1976, they moved to nearby Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana, where they maintained a country homestead until reluctantly relocating to Canyon, Texas, at their son"s behest, in 1999. A homemaker, Mrs. Coleman was known for her hospitality and warmth. She maintained lively and affectionate communication with a wide network of friends and relatives until the end of her life. She was a devoted Christian and a longstanding member of Central Baptist Church in Port Arthur, where she and her husband forged enduring friendships with members of a young adult group they led in the 1940s. Mrs. Coleman was preceded in death by her sisters, Susan ("Sister"), Minnie, Lula, Eula, Harriet, and Dollie; her brother Abraham ("Bud"); and her husband, Fred P. Coleman. The death of her last surviving sibling, Harriet, about whom she cherished memories of childhood camaraderie, and, in later years, of sewing and crocheting together, came less than a day before her own. She is survived by her son, Paul, daughter-in-law, Carol, and 9-year-old grandson, Frederick, of Canyon, Texas, and a host of relatives and friends. The family asks that donations in Mrs. Coleman"s memory be sent to Central Baptist Church, 4545 Highway 73, Port Arthur, TX 77642.
