Obituary for GENE HARTWELL

Services will be at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at the First Baptist Church Chapel in Amarillo with Corky Holland, Pastoral Care Minister, officiating. Viewing will be at Brooks Chapel in Canyon from 8:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Friday and at First Baptist Church Chapel from 12:00 P.M. to 1:45 P.M. on Saturday. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Gene Hartwell was born on September 7, 1924 in Bokchito, Oklahoma to Lorenzo Dow and Rosa Willie Hartwell. He graduated from Paris High School in 1943 and was assigned to active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps on July 8, 1943. Gene was a WW2 veteran who served on the battlefields of the Marshall Islands, Tinian Island, Saipan and Iwo Jima. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal on October 11, 1945. After his discharge, Gene graduated from Paris Jr. College. He married Jessie Vandever on December 14, 1984. He was a member of Rotary Club, Palo Duro Masonic Lodge 1239 AF&AM, and served on the board for the Salvation Army, Food Bank, and the Amarillo Gun Club. Gene owned and operated Amarillo Tile and Supply for many years and then owned Osgood Monument Company. He was an avid hunter and also loved to fish and shoot trap. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and his first wife and the mother of his children, Dell Hartwell. Survivors include his wife, Jessie; two sons, Dick Hartwell and Steve Hartwell; his daughter, Martha Hartwell; two stepsons, Tom Blessen and Richard Vandever; one stepdaughter, Vicki Clary; one brother, Ken Hartwell; eight grandchildren; and twelve great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Jerry O'Connor TTA Youth Scholarship, 800 Baltimore Dr., Hereford, TX 79045, or a favorite charity.
