Obituary for EVERETT FRANK CULP

Memorial Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 8, 2007 at the First Baptist Church in Happy with Paul Burwash, pastor, officiating and retired pastor Travis LaDuke, assisting. He will lie in state at Happy"s Memorial Chapel. Mr. Culp was born on October 23, 1916, in Happy to Frank E. and Birtie Culp. He was a life-long resident of Happy graduating from Happy High School in 1935. He then graduated from West Texas State Teachers College in 1941. While at WT, he met his future wife, Myra Nell Evers of Floydada. They were married on March 6, 1943, in Clovis, New Mexico. During World War II, Everett was a civilian instructor of internal combustion engines at Amarillo Army Air Corps Base and in Biloxi, Mississippi. He also served in the civilian merchant marines delivering cargo to U.S. forces in the South Pacific. Following World War II, Everett returned to Happy where he began farming with his father. He and his father were pioneers in irrigated farming in the area drilling one of the first irrigation wells in Randall County in 1947. In 1964, he was recognized by the Dekalb Sorghum Masters Club for his production of grain sorghum. He also was honored by the FFA as a Honorary Chapter Farmer. He retired from farming in 1980 but continued raising sweet corn for his family and friends in Happy. Everett was an avid supporter of WTAMU and was a member of WT Alumni Association and the Buffalo Club. He enjoyed all WT sports and especially Lady Buff volleyball and basketball. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and two sisters, Juanita Culp and Birtie Belle Kelley. Survivors include his wife, Myra Nell Culp; two sons, Gary Culp and wife Peggy and Wick Culp and wife, Janet, all of Amarillo; two grandchildren, Chris Carson and wife Jamie and Brittney Culp, all of Amarillo; and two great grandchildren, Connor and Colton Carson of Amarillo.
