Obituary for EVELYN BAMSON LUMRY

Services will be at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, December 22, 2004 at the First United Methodist Church of Canyon with Rev. Clark Williams and Rev. Donna Johnston officiating. Visitation will be on Tuesday, December 21 at Brooks Chapel in Canyon from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Amarillo, Texas. Evelyn Bamson Lumry, 91, passed away peacefully in Dallas, Texas on December 19, 2004 after a short illness. She was born on February 11, 1913 on the family farm near Wynne, Arkansas. Her parents were William B. Bamson and Coral Chamberlain Bamson. She graduated from Wynne High School and attended Arkansas State University and Memphis State University. She taught in Arkansas public schools for a few years. She married Lieutenant Colonel Raymond H. Lumry in San Diego, California on February 15, 1948 and enjoyed being an Army wife for the next sixteen years. She was a devoted, life-long Methodist and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Canyon. She served on its Administrative Board and was a Lay Delegate to the Northwest Texas Annual Conference two times. She taught youth Sunday School classes for several years and was a member of the Crusader Sunday School Class for 45 years. She was a long-time member of the Sue Hite Study Club and was an associate member of the Canyon Association of Retired Teachers and School Personnel. For several years she worked with Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. She was an avid traveler and, with her husband, traveled in all fifty states and forty-five countries on six continents. She enjoyed gardening and flower growing and arranging. She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, and three sisters. Evelyn was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, a loyal member of her church and community and a wonderful friend to everyone she met. She will be missed in death as she was loved in life. Survivors include her husband, Col. Raymond H. Lumry, of their home in Dallas; one son, Dr. William R. Lumry, and wife, Rose, of Dallas; one daughter, Sharon E. Lawler, and husband, Peter, of Lexington, MA; one grandson, Randall Lumry, of Dallas; and two granddaughters, Ariel Lumry, of Dallas, and Paige Lawler, of Lexington, MA. The family suggests memorials be to the First United Methodist Church of Canyon, 1818 4th Avenue, Canyon, TX 79015.
