Obituary for ESTELLE ATKERSON

Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 10, 2007at Dreamland Cemetery with Dr. David Lowrie, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Estelle Atkerson was born on April 3, 1919 to Lillie Mae and William Andrew McCarter in Bowie, Texas. She married Onnie L. Atkerson on January 6, 1962 in Clovis, New Mexico. Estelle moved to Canyon in 1931. During WWII, she worked at Pantex and following WWII she worked for Beers Marine Company as a bookkeeper and parts person. Estelle volunteered at VA Medical Center as a commander of DAV Women"s Auxiliary Volunteer Services with over fifty-thousand hours to her credit. She was also the mascot for Women"s Veterans of America. Estelle was a gracious housewife and friend. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Eldon McCarter, Roy McCarter, Ray McCarter, and Carroll Lee McCarter, and two sisters, Willie Huskey and Waunita Brown. Survivors include her husband, Onnie L. Atkerson of the home; daughter, Cristi Woods and husband, Wayne of Amarillo, TX; and grandson, Brandon Woods, two brothers, Bill McCarter of Lockney, TX, and Sherman McCarter of Canyon, TX; and several nieces and nephews.
