Obituary for Emma Jean McGill

Emma Jean McGill, 68, of Canyon, passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2020. She was born on July 2, 1951 in Amarillo to Byron and Lucille Powell Haile.

Emma Jean graduated from Amarillo High School in 1970 and received her Associate’s degree in Interior Decorating from Texas State Technical Institute in Amarillo. She married Amel McGill in Elko, Nevada on July 17, 1982. She was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving from May of 1979 to March of 1983. While in the military, Emma Jean was a helicopter mechanic and worked at the hospital at Hill Air Force Base in Utah.

In her teenage years, Emma Jean volunteered as a Candy Striper at NWTH in Amarillo. She enjoyed studying genealogy and was a published writer. She home schooled for 35 years and led three home school support groups while in Utah. Most importantly to her, she was a Mom and made sure her children knew how to cook, clean, and sew a button.

Emma Jean was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Albert Tanner, Gene Haile, and Jerry Haile. Survivors include her husband, Amel McGill of Canyon; five children, Patrick McGill and wife, Brandy of Utah, Robert McGill and wife, Melody of Utah, Joshua McGill, Abigail McGill, and Tirzah McGill, all of Canyon; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren all of Utah; two brothers, Robert Haile and wife, Barbara and James Tanner, all of Amarillo; and a sister-in-law, Karen Tanner of Wildorado.
