Obituary for Elida 'Lydia' Baes

Elida ‘Lydia’ Baes, 74, of Amarillo, passed away on Tuesday, June 13, 2023. Services will be at 1:00 P.M. on Friday, June 16, 2023 at Diversity Church in Amarillo with Mark England officiating.

Lydia was born on August 7, 1948 in Three Rivers, Texas to Julio and Jovita (Rosales) Benavides. She married Marcial Baes on January 24, 1992 in San Antonio, and they were married for 23 years before he preceded her in death on January 23, 2015.

Lydia was passionate about working with the elderly and loved her job as a caregiver. She was a longtime member of Diversity Church where she enjoyed volunteering for many years. She loved music and singing and was an amazing cook. She cherished her grandchildren and spending time with her family.

Lydia was also preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Vidaurri and Irma Benavides.

Survivors include three children, Sally Howes and fiancé, Jody Sheffield of Ft. Worth, TX, Tina Zapata and fiancé, Ralph Martin of Edmond, OK, and J.R. Zapata and wife, Liz of Hobart, OK; two grandchildren, Kendra Howes-Watson and husband, Collin of Ft. Worth, TX and Austin Zapata and wife, Tanna of Blair, OK; two great grandchildren, Blakelyn and Kase Zapata; six sisters and one brother; and numerous nieces and nephews that she dearly loved.
