Obituary for Elida Flores

Elida Flores, 80, of Canyon, passed away on Tuesday, April 16, 2024. Memorial services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, April 22, 2024 at the First Baptist Church of Canyon with Pastor Sam Medina officiating.

Elida was born on February 25, 1944 in Edcouch, Texas, one of 21 children born to Santos and Josefa (Vera) Garcia. Married on February 25, 1961 in Farwell, Texas, she and her husband, Joe Flores, recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. Together, they lived in Friona for 22 years where Elida was active at Templo Bautista, teaching Sunday school and serving in the children's and youth ministries. In 1982, they moved to Panhandle and then to Canyon in 2019. In both communities, she continued to faithfully serve in the church including helping to found and lead Primera Iglesia Bautista, a ministry of the First Baptist Church of Panhandle.

Elida was known for her faithfulness, hard work, and determination. She was devoted to caring for her family as a homemaker for years as well as becoming a self-taught seamstress and an incredible cook. Her lack of opportunity for a formal education led her to deeply value and encourage higher education for her daughters, who both received degrees in education. Firmly rooted in her faith in Christ, she left a legacy of wisdom, strength, grace, and humility that will continue to guide her family for generations to come.

Elida is preceded in death by her parents and eight siblings, Santos Garcia, Jr., Lupe Ramirez, Francisca Rodriguez, Eva Garcia, Maria Hernandez, Roman Garcia, Erasmo Garcia, and Delicia Cruz.

Survivors include her husband Joe, daughters, Velma Rojas and husband Carlos of Canyon, TX, and Jo Ann Rivera and husband Gabriel of Coppell, TX; five grandchildren, Lucinda Ross and husband Rich of Edmond, OK, Selena Veal and husband Chris of Canyon, TX, Carlos Joel Rojas and wife, Tabitha of Tulsa, OK, Michelle Rivera and Celeste Rivera, both of Coppell, TX; five great-grandchildren, Eloise, Everett, and Charlie Veal, and Reynolds and Rhodes Ross; and six siblings, Arturo Garcia of Lubbock, TX, Joe Garcia of Edinburg, TX, Ayda Lujan of Panhandle, TX, Juana Hernandez of Johnson City, TX, Robert Garcia of Edinburg, TX, and Rogelio Garcia of Idaho.
