Obituary for Ele Maxine Sherrod
Ele Maxine Sherrod, 95, of Canyon, passed away on Wednesday, December 13, 2023. Services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, December 18, 2023 at Brooks Chapel with Rev. Rick Enns, pastor of First Methodist Church of Canyon, officiating.
Maxine was born on September 20, 1928 in Aspermont, Texas to E.V. and Beatrice (Lanier) Smith. She was a graduate of Aspermont High School and received her Bachelor of Science in Education from West Texas State College. She married M. L. Sherrod on her 18th birthday in 1946 in Amarillo. He preceded her in death on December 23, 2016.
Maxine loved kiddos and was passionate about teaching. She taught in Canyon for 20 years, most of those in second grade. She was a very devoted wife and she and M.L. were always very socially active. They enjoyed dancing, entertaining, playing dominoes, and traveling, both internationally and in their RV with friends. She also really enjoyed cooking.
Maxine is also preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Myrtle Manning of Amarillo and Leona Brown of Farmington, NM, and one brother, Chester Smith of Ruidoso, NM.
Survivors include two sons, Clifford Sherrod and wife, Brenda of Canyon and Andy Sherrod of Los Angeles, CA; and a very special friend, Donna Farrow of Canyon.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Dreamland Cemetery, PO Box 38, Canyon, TX 79015, or to BSA Hospice of the Southwest, 5211 SW 9th, Suite 100, Amarillo, TX 79106.
