Obituary for Edna Marie Bassett

Edna Marie Bassett, 88, of Happy, passed away on Friday, September 2, 2022. Services will be at 9:00 A.M. on Friday, September 9, 2022 at Brooks Chapel with Silas Gartin, Esther Wahlin, and Ruth Henderson officiating. Burial will follow in Dreamland Cemetery. Viewing will be from 8:00 A.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, September 8, 2022 at Brooks Chapel in Canyon.

Edna was born on the family farm near Happy on March 17, 1934 to Homer and Dorotha (Young) Bryan. She was a graduate of Happy High School and one of the remaining five members of the class of 1952. Edna had been excited to celebrate their 70th class reunion this fall.

Edna married LaVester Bruce Bassett on July 6, 1956 in Alamogordo, New Mexico. In 1957, they moved to Edna’s parent’s family farm near Happy where they farmed for 27 years. Edna is a member of Non-Denominational Christian Church. She prepared for and hosted church services and many potluck meals in her home. She worked at WTSU where she served as secretary for the WTSU Boys Basketball coach and for the Physical Education Department. She was passionate about family and family gatherings. The traditions she created for family birthdays and holidays will be a lasting legacy. Edna enjoyed sewing, china painting, cooking, and baking. She also loved gardening and flowers and was one of the few that had her own beautiful field of bluebonnets.

Edna was preceded in death by a daughter, Sylvia Marie Bassett, a son, Arnold Bryan Bassett, a grandson, Drew Timothy Friemel, her sister, Laura Bassett, her twin brother, Edward Bryan, and her husband, LaVester Bruce Bassett.

Survivors include two daughters, Shereen LaRee Davis and husband Edwin of Happy and Sheri LaNette Friemel of Amarillo; one son, Teddy Odell Bassett and wife Peggy of Amarillo; daughter-in-law, Susan Bassett of Phoenix Arizona; six grandsons, Jeremiah DeLayne Davis and wife Carolyn of Auburn, Alabama, Colby Dale Davis of Amarillo, Jackson Dale Davis of Canyon, Chandler Reid Bassett and wife Jennifer of Spring, Texas, Dillon Joseph Friemel of Amarillo and Garrett Matthew Friemel of Lubbock; five granddaughters, Lacey J’Nae Bethke and husband Bret of Dimmitt, Aimee Jessica Bassett and Fiancé Will Crooks of Denver, Colorado, Shaina Danelle Francis and husband Michael of New River, Arizona, Ashley Marie Bassett of Amarillo, and Katasha D’Nae Bassett and David Sheplman of Amarillo; five great grandchildren, Elisha J Dobson of Amarillo, Autumn LaRee Bethke, Bodie Cole Bethke, Aubrey Shae Bethke all of Dimmitt and Cora Blue Francis of New River, Arizona; and two brothers, Harold Earl Bryan and wife, Charlotte of Huntsville, AR and Roy Oliver Bryan and wife, Arlene of Belle Vista, AR.

*After the service, a family and friends’ dinner will be hosted at The Shell Event Building on the square in Canyon.
