Obituary for EDNA GERLACH DILLARD

Services will be at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, January 13, 2004, at Brooks Chapel with Rev. Donna Johnston, associate pastor of First United Methodist Church of Canyon, officiating. Burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery. Mrs. Dillard was born on November 1, 1909 in Memphis, Hall County, Texas to Conrad and Nellie George Gerlach. She graduated from Memphis High School and attended West Texas State College. She married James William Dillard on August 22, 1932 in Hollis, Oklahoma. They lived in Borger for thirty-five years, where she was the first woman to serve on a jury in Hutchinson County, and then lived in Canyon for twenty years. She taught Journalism and Spanish for many years in Borger and was then active in volunteer work in Red Cross and Senior Citizens in Canyon. She wrote The Village Voice newsletter at Palo Duro Village where she lived from 1996 to 2000. She was a talented seamstress and did beautiful knitting. She was also active in the Methodist churches in Borger and Canyon. She traveled and studied in Mexico, as well as many other places. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1996. Survivors include two daughters, Elaine Dillard Howell, of Clovis, NM, and Carolyn Dillard McCombs, of Concord, CA; five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, two nieces and three nephews. The family suggests memorials be in memory of Edna Gerlach Dillard to the First United Methodist Church, 1818 4th Avenue, Canyon, Texas 79015; or to Crown of Texas Hospice, 1000 S. Jefferson, Amarillo, Texas 79101.
