Obituary for DUANE F. GUY

Memorial services will be held at 4:00 P.M. on Thursday, September 21, 2006 at the First United Methodist Church of Canyon with Rev. Clark Williams and Rev. Donna Johnston officiating. Private burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery. Duane Francis Guy was born in Atwood, Kansas on December 26, 1928 to Ellen Ruhaak and Franklin Earl Guy. The Guys later moved to Hays, Kansas where Duane graduated from high school. He married Lynette Pearson in McCracken, Kansas on June 5, 1955. Guy served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953 and was stationed in Korea for fourteen months of that time. Guy received Bachelors and Masters degrees in history from Fort Hays State University and the Ph.D. Degree from the University of Kansas. He came to now West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas in 1958 as a history professor. In 1967 he became head of the history department, later history and political science, a position he held until his retirement in 1994. He was recipient of the Faculty Excellence Award in 1985 and was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus in 1995. He served as sponsor for the Interfraternity Council at WT for many years and was an avid WTAMU basketball fan. Guy served as editor of the "Panhandle-Plains Historical Review" for thirteen years; the 1976 "Review" was a definitive work on Palo Duro Canyon and has been reprinted by Texas Tech Press as "The Story of Palo Duro Canyon." He was the author of "A History of the Panhandle Bankers Association" and "Texas 47A???Deaf Smith", co-editor of "A Joyful Journey, A History of the First United Methodist Church, Canyon, Texas, 1889-1989" and a contributor to "Continuing A Joyful Journey." He was active in community affairs: he coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball teams; he was House Manager at the historical drama "Texas" in Palo Duro Canyon for fourteen years; he was a member of the Planning and Zoning Board for the city of Canyon and served on the Canyon Area Library building committee. He was a faithful member of Canyon"s First United Methodist Church and served as chair or member of many of the committees and boards of the church. He was a member of Westerners International, a lay western-history organization, and Phi Alpha Theta, honorary history fraternity. He was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma social fraternity at Fort Hays State. He served as Chair of the 1976 American Revolution Bicentennial Committee of Amarillo and Chair of the Canyon/Randall County Bicentennial Committee and was a member of the Texas Colleges and Universities Bicentennial Committee. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Willard E. Guy and Ralph R. Guy. Survivors include his wie, Lynn, of the home; his son, Marc Guy and wife, Sue, of Carrollton; his daughter, Patti Reeves and husband, Ron, of Plano; and four grandchildren, Jonathan and Jennifer Reeves and Alexa and Aric Guy.
