Gary was born on December 30, 1961 in Marengo, Iowa, to Herbert and Elizabeth (Adam) Vogel. Gary was a 1980 graduate of Hereford High School and he received his BS in Animal Science from Texas Tech University. Gary was a member of the 1983 National Horse Judging Team at Texas Tech, and he traveled many miles with his wife, LeAnne, while on the team. Gary earned his Master’s and Ph.D. in Beef Cattle Nutrition from Oklahoma State University, where he is a distinguished alumnus. Gary was a member and past president of Plains Nutritional Council, a member of National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA), Texas Cattle Feeders Association, the American Society of Animal Science, and a long-time member and past president of the Randall County Livestock Board. Gary was passionate about helping the youth. He was extensively involved in 4-H and wanted each member to do their best. He was a recipient State 4-H Leader Award. He was equally passionate about baseball and wanted each player to do their best.

Gary married LeAnne Hughes, his high school sweetheart, on August 6, 1983 in Hereford, Texas. The two spent formative years together in Stillwater Oklahoma during Gary’s graduate school. After graduate school, Gary and LeAnne moved back to Hereford, where Gary worked at Farr Better Feeds until 1991. In 1991, Gary and LeAnne moved to Canyon, Texas, and Gary started to work at Elanco Animal Health, where he remained until his early passing. Gary was a Senior Technical Consultant, and he was world-renowned for his knowledge of beta-agonists and ruminant nutrition. He authored and coauthored dozens of published and peer-reviewed scientific articles. He loved cattle, both alive and grilled.

Gary loved his family with all his heart and soul, and he taught his boys to do the same. Gary loved watching his boys play baseball and show livestock, and he spent countless hours chasing them on the road. Gary was known for heckling referees. He also enjoyed traveling, the beach, and snorkeling with LeAnne. His boys and his grandchildren, who lovingly called him ‘Numps’, were Gary’s greatest joy. He was a devoted husband and son. He loved his church and church family and he was a devoted member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church. He will be remembered for his deep faith and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. His family will playfully and lovingly remember his frequent quote, “There’s more than one way to get there!” He was always the smartest man in the room.

Gary is preceded in death by a great nephew, Hayden Stephens, his mother and father-in-law, Bob and Marcy Hughes, and a brother-in-law, Lynn Brisendine.
