Obituary for DORIS LEE BILLINGSLEY GABEL

Graveside services will be at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at Castro Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Dimmitt with David Lough, minister at University Church of Christ, officiating. Doris Lee Billingsley Gabel was born on March 31, 1917 in Lamesa, Texas to Lee and Aliean Coffee Billingsley. She attended high school in Lamesa, then attended West Texas State University and Texas Tech where she was a member of Delta Zeta. She married George Gabel on March 24, 1940. She lived in Lamesa from 1917 to 1941, Slaton from 1942 to 1951, Dimmitt from 1952 to 1996, and then she lived at the Hudson House in Canyon from 1996 to the present. She was a charter member of the First Christian Church in Dimmitt where she was a Sunday School teacher. She loved refinishing furniture and cooking, and her family was the most important thing to her. She was preceded in death by her husband, George, in 1990, three sisters, Louise Goodloe, Estelle McBride, and Betty Bratcher, a brother, Jim Billingsley, and a granddaughter, Marci. Survivors include three sons, Tony Gabel, of Conchas Dam, NM, Clay Gabel, of Wildorado, and Kent Gabel, of Sudan; one daughter, Georgeanna Halencak, of Canyon; two sisters, Marjorie Niemeyer, and Marie Stuart, both of Lamesa; fourteen grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild. The family suggests memorials be to the High Plains Children's Home, PO Box 7448, Amarillo, Texas 79114.
