Obituary for Don Olson

Don Olson, 79, of Canyon, passed away on Thursday, August 12, 2021. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Monday, August 16, 2021 at Brooks Chapel in Canyon. Graveside services will be private.

Don was born on January 19, 1942 in Albuquerque, NM to Ray and Ola Mae (Jones) Olson. He graduated from Socorro High School in Socorro, NM. Don was a young entrepreneur. After leaving Socorro, he bought a service station and owned his first business at the age of 19. He later began working for Snap-on Tools as a distributor and field manager, a job he was very passionate about. He married Sunny Kay Wright on September 20, 1964 in Shamrock, and she preceded him in death on April 22, 2010. After retirement, Don purchased a car lot in Amarillo. He always had a sharp business mind and was a hard worker.

Don loved his grandchildren dearly and was the best ‘Papa’ to them all. He also held a special love for his daughters-in-law and his son-in-law. He had a true passion and great talent for woodworking. He was an amazing craftsman. Don was a member of the National Rifle Association.

Don was also preceded in death by three brothers, Roy, Junior, and Bobby Olson and a sister, Doris McKinney. Survivors include his daughter, Cheryl Malcolm and husband, Steve of Canyon and Santa Fe, NM; two sons, Clint Olson and wife, Christi of Canyon and Chad Olson and wife, Nikki of Canyon; seven grandchildren, Hayden Malcolm, Dakota Olson, McKenna Olson, Kenidy Olson, Cade Olson, Brody Olson, and Benjamin Malcolm, all of Canyon; two sisters, Donna Gacanich of Socorro, NM and Janet Wartenburg and husband, Grant of Houston; and two cousins whom he held very dear, Dottie and Paula.
