Obituary for D.L. Harguess

D.L. Harguess, 82, of the Amarillo and Canyon area, passed away on Saturday, December 23, 2023. Memorial services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at the University Church of Christ in Canyon with David Lough and Jonathan Paige officiating.

D.L. was born on September 21, 1941 in Littlefield, Texas to Daniel Lay and Annie Jewel (Robinson) Harguess. He was a 1960 graduate of Logan High School and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern New Mexico University in Portales. He married Ruth Cooper in Portales on August 4, 1964.

D.L. had several business endeavors including owning a mobile home and travel trailer dealership and several car dealerships. In Friona, he owned the only known Ford and Chevrolet dealership under one roof and owned D.L. Thriftway as well. He also served as a minister and preached in Carlsbad and Ruidoso, NM, Leadville, CO, and Friona, TX as well as being an exceptional youth leader. In addition, he enjoyed serving as a fill in minister in many churches when there was a need.

He was a member and elder of the 6th St. Church of Christ in Friona, and University Church of Christ in Canyon. He loved teaching others and found such joy in greeting people and making them feel welcome.
D.L. shared his love of fishing with Ruth and enjoyed taking his grandchildren water skiing and tubing. He never met a stranger, and he loved his church family dearly.

His greatest joy in life was his grandchildren and he was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He will be lovingly remembered for his faith and his love of family.

D.L. was preceded in death by his father, his mother, and his stepmother, Irene Harguess.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Ruth Harguess; two daughters, Dee Ann Hutson and husband, Dave, and Tammy Smith and husband, Steven; four grandchildren, Brandy Schenk and husband, Sean, Shelby Mata and husband, Jason, and Kirstie and Daniel Smith; three great grandchildren, Kimber, Kora, and Karter Schenk; and two brothers, Tom Harguess and wife, Carol and Phil Harguess and wife, Kim.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to High Plains Children’s Home, PO Box 7448, Amarillo, TX 79114 or to Blue Haven Youth Camp, 62 S St., Las Vegas, NM 87701.
