Obituary

Delores Ann Behrens, 82, of Canyon, passed away on Monday, January 6, 2020. Graveside services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, January 9, 2020 in Dreamland Cemetery. Memorial services will follow at 11:00 A.M. at the First Baptist Church of Canyon with Curtis House, minister of Harvest Christian Church of Amarillo, Bill DuBose, and William Fifer, pastor of Holy Trinity Church of God and Christ in Amarillo, officiating.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at Brooks Chapel. Delores was born on February 5, 1937 at home in Tell, Texas to Beacher Hanley Bohannon and Dora Bell Downing Bohannon. She graduated from Childress High School in 1955. She received a Bachelor of Education degree in 1964 from West Texas State College and her Master of Education degree in 1968. She worked her way through college by working for the Canyon ISD Superintendent, Joe Gibson. She was 6 hours short of earning a Doctorate degree. Delores married her college sweetheart, Jerry Leland Behrens, in Childress on June 22, 1963.  He preceded her in death on February 4, 2016. She loved driving Jerry to ball games across the county, state and country. They were both avid sports fans and loved to travel together. They especially enjoyed following WT Athletics and their grandkids sporting events. Delores’ passion was education. She spent 37 years working in education. She taught for Odessa High School, Odessa College, and then for Amarillo College from 1971 to 2005. While teaching at Amarillo College, she also helped Jerry with his Herff Jones business. She valued higher education and had a heart to equip and encourage as many students as she could. She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha, WT Buffalo Club, First Baptist Church of Canyon, and several teaching associations.  Delores and her friends had their own Little Red Convertible Club. She also enjoyed antique shopping and china painting with her friends. She was a devoted wife, loyal mother, and a fierce grandma. She was also preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Marguerite Havins and Joyce Wallace. Survivors include her son, Phil Behrens and wife Stephanie, of Timpson; daughter, Jara DuBose and husband Bill, of Abernathy; nine grandchildren, Brock, Brylee, Brandt, Brette Kaite, Briar Tru and Brecken Behrens and Kalli, Khaki, and Kodi Belle DuBose; her grandchildren in love, McKayla, McKall and Behren Morton; sister-in-law, Elaine Marshall; niece, Carolyn Hyden; nephew, Danny Havins; great niece, Lindsay Chandler; and a great nephew, Wade Havins. She was passionately known by her nieces and nephews as “Aunt Billie.” In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials go to the WTAMU Foundation, Delores Behrens Memorial Education Scholarship, WTAMU Box 60766, Canyon, TX 79016.
