Obituary for Debbie Nelson

“We’re all travelers in this world-from sweet grass to the packin’ house-birth till death-we travel between eternities."

Debbie “Nana” Nelson, 65, of Canyon passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Wednesday, February 14, 2024. Graveside services will be at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, February 16, 2024 at Memory Gardens Cemetery with Chase Clark, pastor of Hillside Christian Church of Canyon, officiating.

Debbie was born on February 5, 1959 in Amarillo to Daniel and Jerry (Smith) Cargo. She married the love of her life, Jim Nelson, on February 10, 1978 in Dumas and recently celebrated their 46th anniversary. They moved to Canyon in 2019 to be closer to their children and grandbabies.

Debbie has always been known to be a “grown up” getting her driver’s license at 15 and started working soon after. She never stopped working whether at a job or at home for her family. In her younger years, Debbie was a prestige roller skater, a beautiful singer, and loved to boot scoot across the dance floor to country music. She was known to indulge in Jose Cuervo once in a blue moon. She cross stitched late at night to satisfy her creativity and loved to gift her pictures as well as her homemade dolls. She had a dream of becoming a nurse and while in school had to stop to care for her son, Coby. Becoming “Nana” was her most important job and she loved her grandbabies “to the moon and back”. She enjoyed being a #1 customer at Journey’s Coffee shop and smoking to appease her quiet time and sanity from all those grandbabies.

Nana is preceded in death by her parents, brother, Rusty Cargo, and her sister-in-law, Sheila St. Clair.

Survivors include her husband, Jim Nelson; her son, Coby “The Cobmaster” Nelson; her daughter, Christy Hernandez and her favorite son-in-law Miguel; five grandchildren, Lexi girl, Liam “Leimer”, Ellie belly, Lisey girl, and Lukas Paduckas; four siblings, Steve Cargo and wife, Holly, Vicki Beard and husband, George, Danny Cargo and wife, Jaymie, and Keith Cargo and wife Wendy; numerous nieces and nephews; and her much loved and spoiled Chihuahua Izzy.

In lieu of flowers, the family would love for you to go to Journey Canyon Coffee and bless the person behind you by paying for a cup of coffee in her honor.

John 16:22 “Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.”
