Obituary for D. Meade Humphries

D. Meade Humphries, 84, of Canyon, passed away on Friday, January 28, 2022. Memorial services will be at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, February 1, 2022 at the First Baptist Church of Amarillo with Dr. Howard Batson, pastor, officiating.

Meade was born on July 24, 1937 in Randall County to E.H. and Mary (Gillham) Humphries. He received his Master’s in Petroleum Geology from West Texas State University with a double major in Soil Sciences.
Meade married Fanita Marshall at the First Baptist Church of Canyon on April 20, 1958. He began as a volunteer fireman for the Canyon Fire Department on the Search and Rescue Squad. After graduation, he worked for the Texas Panhandle Simple Log Service and then for Michigan-Wisconsin Pipeline Company as a reservoir geologist. Later, Meade worked for The Superior Oil Company as the production geologist, where he drilled the deepest well in the Texas Panhandle (25,000 feet). Meade completed his career at Exxon Mobile as the senior geologist. He found and developed two oil fields in Oklahoma, the Antioch and the Panther Creek Oilfields.

Meade was a member of the First Baptist Church of Amarillo, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the Society of Well Log Analysts, and the Lewis and Clark Heritage Trail Foundation. He was an avid reader and especially enjoyed reading anything related to Western History, Lewis and Clark, or WWII battlegrounds, particularly the Custer Battle Ground. He and Fanita loved visiting many of the trails and battle ground sites. He loved his poodles and enjoyed fried catfish.

Meade was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Fanita Humphries of the home; his son, Marshall Leyden Humphries of Canyon; two brothers, Gary Humphries and wife, Ranelle of The Woodlands and Nelton Humphries and wife, Dana of Linden; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved poodles, Poppy and Pansy, II.

The family suggests memorials be to the Lewis and Clark Heritage Trail Foundation, Box 3434, Great Falls, MT 59403.
