Obituary for CHARLIE W. SMITH

Services will be 2:00 P.M. on Monday, April 2, 2007 at the First Baptist Church in Canyon, Texas with Dr. David Lowrie, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Amarillo, Texas. There will be a visitation from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. on Sunday, April 1, 2007 at Brooks Chapel. Mr. Smith was born in Illinois Bend, Texas, June 25, 1915, to Albert Bishop Smith and Mattie Lou Smith. As a young man, Charlie helped his father on the farm. He worked for Huber Carbon black plant in Borger, Texas for years and on oil derricks for several years. On February 6, 1941, Mr. Smith enlisted in the 1st Armed Division Medical Detachment of the Army. He was captured by the Germans in Tunisia, Africa on November 26. On the 27th of November the German flew him to Italy. There he was put into prison in December of 1942 at Camp 59, where he was held until his escape on December 15, 1943. He spent many cold nights in the mountains, hiding out, eating what-ever he could find, surviving however he could. Mr. Smith was awarded a WWII Victory Metal and four other metals. He married Ruby Simon Sullivan in March of 1959. They were members of the First Baptist Church of Canyon. They moved to Aurora, Colorado in 1962, where he worked for the City of Aurora until 1980. Upon retiring there, he returned to Canyon. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his mother and father, two brothers, Orval Smith and Newell Smith, and a sister, Edith Womble. Survivors include his wife, Ruby; step-daughter, Sandra Boyette and husband; David, two step-sons, Philipp Sullivan and David Sullivan and wife, Emily; sister, Eunice Bentley of Houston; eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The Family suggest memorials be sent to the VA Hospitals or a memorial of your choice.
