Obituary for Charles Douglas "Doug" Rittenberry

Charles Douglas “Doug” Rittenberry, 83, of Canyon passed away on Saturday, June 9, 2018. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 10:00 to 11:30 A.M. on Tuesday, June 12 at Brooks Chapel. Graveside services will follow at 2:00 P.M. at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Amarillo with Dr. Howard K. Batson, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Amarillo, officiating. Mr. Rittenberry was born July 27, 1934 in Amarillo. He grew up in Amarillo and attended Margaret Wills, Sam Houston, Amarillo High School, Kemper Military School and West Texas State College. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army Reserves in 1962. Doug married Sue Smith of Hereford in Hereford in 1954. They were married for 64 years. They lived near Canyon where he and his wife farmed and raised cattle. He was active in raising Charolais Cattle. He was a charter member of the Golden Spread Charolais where he was an officer and worked with sales and shows, etc. He was a member of several other cattle associations. He was an active member and a chairman in the Pantex Performance Bull Test Station. He was a charter member of the Canyon Jaycees and served several years as an officer and president. He stayed active until being an “Exhausted Rooster” at age 35. Doug and Sue were members of the Canyon Country Club for over 60 years where they built their retirement home. He loved to play golf. He was active in his younger years and served as president of Canyon Country Club and worked with all kinds of projects. Doug and Sue made many life-long friends there. They’re members of the First Baptist Church of Amarillo and also members of the Barnabus Sunday School and Bible Study Class. Mr. Rittenberry was preceded in death by his father, C.B. Rittenberry, mother, Lois Rittenberry and sister, Dorothy Gouldy. Survivors include his wife, Sue, a son, Douglas, Jr. of Amarillo; two daughters, Sylvia Tucker and husband, Homer of Amarillo; Dorothy Davis and husband, Dale of Canyon; four grandchildren, Austin Davis of Amarillo, Tim Tucker, Holli Tucker, and Kelli Orford; two great grandchildren; a niece, Janice Paul and husband, Duane of La Canada, California, a nephew, David Gouldy and wife, Pat of Arlington. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the First Baptist Church, 1208 S. Tyler St., Amarillo, TX 79101 or to your favorite charity.
