Obituary for Charles Edwin 'Bud' Pender

Charles Edwin ‘Bud’ Pender, 81, of Canyon, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 22, 2024. Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Umbarger with Father Alvin Tshuma as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. A vigil will be held at 6:00 P.M. on Tuesday, March 26, 2024 at Brooks Chapel in Canyon.

Charles was born on October 2, 1942 in El Paso to Willie Albert and Edna (Holt) Pender. He was a graduate of Irvin High School in El Paso and received his degree in Agricultural Economics from Texas Tech University in 1967. He married Regina Cronan in Houston on August 29, 1964 and they treasured almost 60 years together.

Charles started his early career as a commodities broker and then went into farming in the Umbarger area for many years, retiring as a construction supervisor. He was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Umbarger where he and Regina served tea and coffee at the sausage festival for many years.

Charles was devoted to loving and caring for his wife. He was an extremely proud grandfather and will be lovingly remembered as the best grandpa and Uncle Bud ever! The farm and his animals were very dear to Charles, and he delighted in puttering around the barn. He could fix anything and enjoyed taking things apart (not necessarily putting them back together). He was also an avid reader and working in his garden was a favorite pastime. His family and friends will fondly remember him as funny, witty, and a great storyteller.

Because he was so strong and resilient, his family affectionately nick named him ‘Boot Leather Bud’ and their heartfelt quote was ‘Dad is a privilege.’

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, James and Robert Pender, and a sister, Barbara Watkins.

Survivors include his wife, Regina Pender, of the home; six children, Sam Pender of Amarillo, Regina ‘Nini’ Kern and husband, Francis of Marianna, AR, Bridget Gervasi and husband, Terry of Amarillo, Meridith Preston and husband, Scott of Arlington, TN, Jamie Pender of Arlington, TN, and David Pender of Amarillo; sister, Sally O’Toole and husband, John of San Jose, CA; brother, Tom Pender and wife, Debbie of Vancouver, WA; 12 grandchildren, Jacob Kern, Lauren Smith, Caitlin ‘Cricket’ Graham, Seth Kern, London Wilson, Azzan Wilson, Nick Gervasi, Anna Marie Chaffin, Dylan Chaffin, Elijah Preston, Madelyn Preston, and Emily Gross; 5 great grandchildren; and his brother-in- law Michael Cronan and wife Merilyn, Houston, TX.
