Obituary for Charles 'Chuck' Oakley

Charles “Chuck” Leroy Oakley who was born on September 16, 1937 in Springfield, Colorado but lived most of his life in Stratford, Texas, recently lost his short battle with lung cancer on January 20, 2024. Memorial services will be at 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at Brooks Chapel in Canyon.

An old-school cowboy with a heart of gold, Papa Chuck, as he was lovingly called by those who knew him, was truly one of a kind. His 67-year love affair with a beautiful young woman named Nancy Jo Wibbing resulted in a 66-year marriage and three daughters that he adored and loved with all his heart.

His oldest daughter, Toni Johnson, got her self-assuredness and her ability to love her family deeply from her daddy. Toni is married to Rick Johnson. They have their sons, Ryan, Brady and Cody Johnson, a daughter and son-in-law, Alissa and Tyler Eldridge, and grandchildren, Clara and Waylon Eldridge.

His middle daughter, Leah Brendel, got both her stubborn streak and her ability to love from her daddy. She is married to Mike Brendel. Leah’s family includes her daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and DeeJay Bettes and their children, Natalie, Katelyn, Aaron, and Logan, and a daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Greg Priddy and their children, Ryan and Peyton.

His youngest daughter, Sami Womack, got her sense of humor and ability to tell a story from her daddy. Sami was married to the late Dustin Womack, and they are the parents of Laura and Hanah Leigh Womack.

Papa loved his children. He really loved his grandchildren… but his favorite people were his great-grandchildren. For years he kept and raised horses so that his kids and grandkids could have pony rides. He would often organize water balloon fights in the backyard just to listen to them laugh and giggle and for the chance to play like he was young. He might have been 86 in years, but his heart and soul were truly 12.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother Milton and Tincy Oakley; his in-laws, whom he loved like his own parents, Harlan and Sammie Wibbing; his brothers Tommy and Teddy Oakley; his son-in-law Dustin Womack and his grandson Ryan Cole Johnson.

Somewhere in heaven there is a water balloon fight with pony rides happening as you read this.

The family suggests memorials be to High Plains Children’s Home, PO Box 7448, Amarillo, TX 79114.
