Obituary for CATHERINE GREER HICKS

Graveside services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, June 7, 2012 at Dreamland Cemetery with Donna Johnston officiating. Catherine "Lucille" Greer Hicks was born November 7, 1925 to Marion Thomas Greer and Ada Ellen Elliott in Alex, Oklahoma. Lucille started very early picking cotton in OK to help support her parents and siblings. The Greer family came to TX in the 1940"s, settling in the Canyon area. She married M.W. (Bill) Hicks on November 13, 1943 in Clovis, NM. To this union was born Katherine Ann, Marion, Allen, and Linda. Lucille was a homemaker and farm wife residing west of Canyon for over 40 years with her husband Bill. Lucille shared the responsibility of the farming operation- driving tractors, grain trucks and raising farm animals. Her love of the farm life sparked the love and support she would show for her children and grandchildren as they participated in local stock shows. Besides being the family seamstress, she was known for her gardening skills- growing and preserving vegetables and fruits for her family"s dinner table. She took great pride in her beautiful flower gardens. Lucille was the heart of her family, sharing the family home with nieces, nephews and many friends of her children, providing love and stability to all who came to her home. Lucille was self-employed for a number of years as a care giver at Neblett hospital and in private homes when needed. For more than 20 years, Lucille displayed her love of Christmas with an outside Christmas display that would rival the "Griswalds". People from far and near came in bumper to bumper traffic to admire the Christmas creations. She won numerous awards through the years for her creativity. Due to declining health in recent years, Lucille moved into Canyon and continued her love of the farm life by transforming her yard into a beautiful flower garden. She supported and followed each of her children and grandchildren in all the many sports they were involved in, traveling many, many times to Conroe, Dalhart, and throughout the local area. Lucille was a member of the Buffalo Riding Club, Randall Co. Jr. Livestock Association, the Dallam Co. Livestock Association, First United Methodist Church, Randall Co. Little League and Babe Ruth League. Lucille left this world on June 4th to join her family in heaven. She was preceded in death in 1983 by her husband, Bill, a daughter, Katherine Ann in 1944, a great-granddaughter, Tayelor Ann Nicholson in 2001, her parents, 3 sisters, Emma Howard, Jessie Childers, Leona Brummett, and her only brother, Roy Greer. She is survived by her children, Marion and Suzy Hicks of Umbarger, TX, Allen Hicks of Dalhart and Linda and Bill Mixon of Conroe, TX; 12 grandchildren, Doug and Judean Hicks, of Palestine, TX, Danny and Nicole Hicks, of Umbarger, Jason and Carrie Hicks, of Wildorado, Matt and Anna Hicks, of Canyon, Kyle and Liz Mixon, Christopher and Monique Mixon, and Lance Mixon, all of Conroe, TX, Bridgett and Dennis Nicholson of Dalhart, Chad Hicks, Dalton Hicks, Colton Hicks, all of Dalhart and Ashely Hicks of Amarillo. So precious in her eyes are her great-grandchildren, Sawyer, Savannah, McKenzie, Josie, Addison, Chloe, Tayton, Trystan, Taylan, Carson, Graham, Haliey, Conner, Mason, and a great-grandbaby due in January 2013. In lieu of flowers the family would suggest memorials be to BSA Hospice PO Box 950, Amarillo, TX, 79176 or Canyon Cares, 1719 5th Ave. Canyon, TX 79015.
