Obituary for BURNEY BRYCE SLACK Jr.

Services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at the First Baptist Church of Canyon with Dr. David L. Lowrie, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 4 from 5:00 - 7:00 P.M. at Brooks Chapel. Burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery. Burney Bryce Slack, Jr. was born on his family"s farm in Randall County, Texas to Burney and Clara Lou Slack on December 15, 1930. Bryce grew up in Canyon, was an active member of First Baptist Church, and graduated from Canyon High School in 1949. He enjoyed farming with his dad for many years. Mr. Slack served in the National Guard and earned his Bachelor of Business degree from Baylor University in 1953. He earned his Master"s degree in Education from West Texas State University in 1959 and completed postgraduate work at the University of Texas, Texas Tech, and Iowa State University. Mr. Slack served as an area educator for thirty-eight years. He taught in Dalhart, Vega, Amarillo, and in Canyon, Texas. He served the Canyon Independent School District for 18 years as an elementary school teacher and principal. He felt every child should be given opportunities to learn and excel. Bryce was also principal at MacArthur Elementary School in Liberal, Kansas for 16 years until his retirement in 1994. Bryce and Shirley Jean Goodman of Canyon were married on December 28, 1951. They were married for 43 years until her death in 1994. They have four children: Lynette McCoy of Overland Park, Kansas, Michael Slack of Foster, Oregon, James Slack or Overland Park, Kansas, and Lori Armstrong of Houston, Texas. They also have six grandchildren: Sheredy, Tamara, and Josie McCoy, and Sam, Darcy, and Hope Armstrong. On July 8, 2000, Bryce married Luella Irwin McCarter and together, they have greatly enjoyed their home, church, and friends for nine years. Bryce"s children are very grateful to Luella, her children and grandchildren for welcoming him into their lives and for Luella"s care for him.
