Obituary for Billy Joe McBroom

On Monday, September 14, 2020, Billy Joe McBroom, went to walk the golden streets of Heaven at age 85.

Services will be 10:00 A.M. Thursday, September 17, 2020 at the Methodist Church in Happy with Rev. Tom Stribling, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Happy Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 16 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Brooks Chapel in Canyon.

Billy was born on May 16, 1935 in Canyon, Texas to Jack and Mable McBroom. He had 2 sisters, Martha and Dorothy and 6 brothers, Jack Jr., Delbert, Everett, Alvin Ray, Jimmy, and Orin. He married the love of his life, Betty Sue Walker on July 28, 1961. They raised two daughters, Melissa Jo Massie and Karen Sue Meehan.
Billy joined the army in 1960 and was deployed to Korea during the Korean Conflict, which ended shortly before he arrived, because he claims, “they knew I was coming.” He was later honorably discharged in 1963 and returned to his family. He retired from WTAMU in the maintenance department after 25 years of service. He enjoyed watching his granddaughters play softball and was at every single game, heat or snow. He took every chance he had to go gambling, which he often wouldn’t tell us about until he returned. He loved to give everyone a hard time and was known for his quick wit and sarcasm. He was compassionate, loving, caring, and kind. He was a devoted father and Papa and missed his wife everyday for the past 10 years. Billy had great faith in God and was a member of the Methodist Church in Happy, Texas, where he was a longtime resident.

Billy is preceded in death by wife, Betty McBroom, his parents, and his 8 siblings. He is survived by his daughters, Melissa Jo Massie and husband Chuck Massie, and Karen Sue Meehan; his granddaughters, Lauren, Morgan, Betty, Felicia, Stephanie, and Kayla; and several great grandchildren.
