Obituary for Billy Charles Mayfield

Billy Charles Mayfield, 84, of Amarillo, passed away on Saturday, June 19, 2021. The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.

Billy was born on October 18, 1936 in Knox County, Texas to his biological parents, Howard and Johnnie (Whatley) Griffith. After his parents died when he was very young, he was adopted by Cleve and Odessa (Whatley) Mayfield.

Billy graduated from Quanah High School in 1955 and married Marie Hoggins on February 28, 1958 in Tulia, Texas. He worked for 19 years for the Texas Highway Department Engineering Division and then worked for 14 years in sales for Gifford-Hill Concrete Pipe Company. Billy and Marie spent the next 11 years working in a company they started, doing financial, civil and criminal background checks.

Billy was very active in Khiva Shrine having served as a Director, and its Shrine Clown Unit, having served as President. He was a longtime member of the Church of Christ, currently at Central Church of Christ. Billy enjoyed shooting, gunsmithing and working with his registered therapy dog, Ford, taking him to Children’s Hospital and home hospice patients.

Billy is preceded in death by his birth and adopted parents, four siblings, Joan Griffith Johnson, Kenneth Griffith, Don Ed Griffith, and Johnny Weeks Clement, and a great granddaughter, Laikken Mayfield. Survivors include his wife, Marie Hoggins Mayfield of Amarillo; two sons, Terry Mayfield and wife, Cindy and Billy Mayfield, Jr., all of Amarillo; two grandchildren, Bobby Mayfield and wife, Ronna of Sunray and Madison Mayfield Penton and husband, Jared of Diana, TX; three great-granddaughters, Lettie, Lennox, and Lillian Mayfield of Sunray; and sister-in-law, Rae Hoggins of League City, TX.

The family would like to thank Stephanie Michael and her Heavenly Home staff and BSA Hospice of the Southwest for their exceptional care of Billy.
