Obituary for BETTIE MATTHEWS

Services willbe 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, June 9 at Brooks Chapel with Dr. David L. Lowrie, Jr., pastor of First Baptist Church in Canyon, officiating. Burial is at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Amarillo. Bettie Matthews was born November 29, 1928 to Dewitt and Minnie Jo Lancaster Hardee. Bettie attended school thru the 8th grade, and at the age of 14 she started to work at Leonard"s Department Store sorting war stamps. Bettie met the love of her life, Frank Matthews, in Fort Worth. They married on September 14, 1946. He preceded her in death in 2006. They lived in Fort Worth and then moved to Muleshoe to raise a family. In 1967, the family moved to Amarillo, where she worked for the Whittenburg family. After retirement they moved to Duncan, Oklahoma. Bettie was a member of the ETA Sorority, including the ETA Episolon Chapter in Amarillo and the Gamma Upsilon Chapter in Duncan, Oklahoma. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a son, Walter in 2001, and a brother, Joe Hardee. Survivors include her two sons, Wayne Matthews and wife, Rudi Kaye, of Canyon, Tim Matthews, of Sevierville, TN; a daughter-in-law, Laura Matthews, of Chesterfield, VA; nine grandchildren, Beth Ann, Valerie, and Jared Matthews, of Chesterfield, VA, Brooke Irwin and husband, Terrence, of Canyon, Tiffany Kemp and husband, Billy, of Henryetta, OK, Christopher Matthews, of Canyon, Sr. Airman Jason Matthews, stationed in Iraq; two great granddaughters, Kilee Kemp and Bentli Irwin; and a sister, Frances Wadell, of Aurora, CO. The family suggests that memorials be made to Hospice Care of the Southwest, 1301 S. Coulter, Ste. 404, Amarillo, TX 79106.
