Obituary for Benny Allison

Benny Allison, 80, of Canyon, Texas passed away on August 30, 2019 in Amarillo, Texas. Memorial services will be at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, September 4, 2019 at Brooks Chapel with Pastor Steve Olson and Darrell Miles of Cary, North Carolina, officiating. Private burial will precede the services at 10:00 A.M. at Dreamland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday, September 3, 2019 at Brooks Chapel. Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Directors. Benny was born in Rule, Texas to Oscar A. and Ruth Edith Allison on November 9, 1938. He went to school at Rule ISD and upon graduation entered West Texas College graduating with degrees in Bachelor of Science and Master of Education. While in college he worked at Coopers Market in Canyon where he met his future wife, Wilma. He married Wilma Burkett on July 3, 1964, and both moved to Amarillo where he began his teaching career in Physical Education at Olsen Park Elementary with AISD. Following 5 years, Benny and Wilma accepted teaching assignments with Boys Ranch ISD. Benny served in all areas of assignments consisting of coaching of basketball, football, track and other Ranch events. Benny received many awards for his services. Hundreds of young boys were influenced by his leadership and Benny always welcomed seeing their accomplishments in life. His warmth of friendship will always be cherished! With 32 years of service, Benny retired from the Ranch in 1996 and moved back to Canyon. Both Benny and Wilma joined First Baptist Church and enjoyed visiting with family and friends and traveling to Dallas to visit their daughters. Benny is preceded in death by his father, Oscar A. Allison; mother, Ruth Edith Allison; brother, Alfred Allison and wife, Frances; sister, Laverne Lee and husband, Donald; twin sister, Wanda Lehrmann; and nephews, Eugene Lee and Scott Raymond. Benny is survived by his wife, Wilma of 55 years; two daughters, Angela Karhu and husband Brian, and Andrea Welding; three grandsons, Tyler Beckner, Ryan Karhu, and Zack Hukill; several nieces, nephews, and cousins as well as in-laws, friends, and extended Boys Ranch family. Pall bearers will be the Canyon City Lodge #730 Masons. Memorials may be given to Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch Alumni Association PO Box 9435 Amarillo, Texas 79105.
