Obituary for ANGELO ANTHONY MELORO

Memorial Services will be 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at Brooks Chapel with MSGR Rex Nicholls, Our Lady of Guadalupe, officiating. Dr. Angelo Anthony Meloro was born in Binghamton, New York to Lorenzo Meloro and Filomena Deabbiero Meloro. The thirteen-year resident of Pahrump, Nevada and recent resident of Amarillo, Texas passed away at the age of 85 at home with his loving wife at his side and his devoted daughter with him in spirit if not in flesh. Angelo lived a colorful life. As a young man he played the trumpet in a circus band, although he denied that he "ran away with the circus" as his sister had always said. He maintained that Lucy "was the one who took me there!" After completing college and medical school, he began a lengthy and diverse medical practice that spanned over a half century. His medical expertise ranged from medical, surgical and obstetrical to general practice. These include serving as staff physician in the State Corrections medical Services at the Santa Fe Penitentiary. In June 2004, the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine honored him for 55 years of meritorious service to the Osteopathic profession. In addition to being a physician, he was elected mayor of Socorro, New Mexico and served as such for four years. One of the many highlights of his career as a physician was in February 1958, when he was transported by a Sherman Tank in Waterford, Pennsylvania blizzard to the farmhouse of one of his patients. She was in labor and about to deliver her sixth child. Because of the blizzard, she was unable to get to the hospital. The miracle of the story is that the article was reported in the town where the brother of the baby"s father lived. The two brothers had been separated during the communist invasion of their country and had lost all contact until the brother read the article and sought out his long-lost sibling to congratulate him on the birth. Dr. Meloro also had the good fortune to visit his parent"s homeland of Italy and attended mass given by Padre Pio in San Giovanni Rotondo. After mass, Padre Pio passed Angelo as he was standing in the corridor. Padre Pio walked to the end of the corridor, turned around, and walked back only to stop in front of Angelo. Padre Pio proceeded to slap Angelo on his left cheek, then the right, and walked away. Angelo was puzzled by this action until his friend exclaimed, "You have just been blessed by Padre Pio!" Angelo is proceeded in death by his father Lorenzo, mother Filomena, his brothers Anthony and Danny, and his sister Lucy Anna Meloro-Post. He is survived by his wife of thirteen years, Peggy of Canyon, Texas and his daughter, Angela Roybal of Albuquerque, New Mexico, whom he was proud to inform all. is a registered nurse. The family would like to send a special thanks to the Odyssey Hospice of Amarillo, Texas and the Nathan Adelson Hospice of Pahrump, Nevada and his primary care physicians Dr. Frank Toppo of Pahrump, Nevada and Dr. Tracy Rausch of Amarillo, Texas.
