Obituary for Alvin A. "Tommy" Thomas Jr.

Alvin A. “Tommy” Thomas, Jr., 80, of Canyon, passed away on May 6, 2018. Services will be 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church of Canyon with Rev. Rick Enns, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Llano Cemetery in Amarillo. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 8 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Brooks Chapel. Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Directors. Tommy was born March 20, 1938 in Dallas to Alvin and Ruth Cogswell Thomas. He graduated from the University of Texas in Austin with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He was a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He married Karen Sue Crossland on January 24, 1969 at Polk Street United Methodist Church in Amarillo. She preceded him in death on May 25, 2014. Tommy was the co-owner and terminal manager of Thomas Cartage, then the terminal manager for Graves, the division manager for ANR, and a safety manager at Coy Cartage. He was a member of the Pathfinders Sunday School Class at the First United Methodist Church, Rotary Club, NRA, and the Canyon Country Club. Tommy enjoyed playing golf. He loved to put together models and do wood carvings. He was an avid model train collector and a proud Republican. He loved his family and grandchildren very much. He was also preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Joel Thomas. Survivors include his five children, Kimberley Rutherford and husband, Keith of Wildorado, Brian Thomas and wife, Charlotte, Kelly Vogler and husband, Mark, Tommie Sue Camarillo and husband, Michael, all of Amarillo, and Corey Thomas and wife, Kendra of Aubrey; grandchildren include, Dr. Tara Rutherford-Lawless and husband, Justin of Round Rock, Jason David Joos and wife, Mindy of Ft. Worth, Haley Rutherford-Smith and husband, Dr. Scott Smith of San Antonio, Kaitlin Rutherford of San Antonio, Madison Walker and husband, Lance, McKenna Thomas, Catherine Vogler, Hayden Vogler, Jacob Whittington, all of Amarillo, Caleb Whittington and wife, Katie of Canadian, Mason Camarillo of Amarillo, Bay Thomas, Bree Thomas, of Aubrey; great-grandchildren, Colton and Addison Lawless of Round Rock, Braelyn Joos of Ft. Worth, Archer Smith of San Antonio, Walter Whittington of Canadian and three great-grandbabies on the way; and a sister, Mary Lynn Beatty and husband, Jack of Aubrey.
