Obituary for ALONZO F. ADKINS Jr.

Graveside services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at Dreamland Cemetery. Dr. Alonzo "Lonnie" F. Adkins, Jr. was born on June 9, 1931 in Fort Worth, TX to Alonzo Franklin and Mollie Sawyer Adkins, Sr. He married Joyce Marie Medeiros in Lubbock on August 16, 1963. He worked his way through college and received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Texas Tech University. He taught Electrical Engineering at Texas Tech for seven years. He then taught at Amarillo College for 29 ½ years and became the chairman of the Electrical Engineering Technology Department, retiring in 1999. He was a registered Professional Engineer for the state of Texas, was a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, IEEE, and past president of Texas Alliance of Minorities in Engineering. He was inducted into the Texas Tech Electrical and Computer Engineering Academy. He was also a member of the Khiva Shrine in Amarillo, Scottish Rite Valley of Dallas, Orient of Texas, and received his 50 year pin as a member of the Keller Masonic Lodge #1084. He supported many events of Science and Technology Engineering and Mathematics education at all levels. He enjoyed his studying, Sudoku puzzles, his workouts, gardening, and canning. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Alonzo "Lonnie" F. Adkins, III. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Adkins; a daughter, Diana Loree and husband, Ellis; two stepsons, John Morris and David Morris; two sons, Michael Adkins and wife, Jeanne, and Mark Adkins; a brother, Calvin Adkins; six grandchildren, John Paul, Jennifer, Carolyn, William, Thomas, and Jacob; and two great grandchildren.
